I found this out in a very roundabout way. A friend, a perfumer, wrote me this morning that her old boyfriend, artist Jeremy Blake was missing, his clothes, ID, passport found by Rockaway Beach. He was despondent since his girlfriend has committed suicide the week before. She was in NYC to film a movie. All of a sudden, I remembered Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan, the couple. I called my friend and she confirmed, yes, Theresa Duncan had taken her life. There is little hope Jeremy will be found alive, as people saw "a figure" swimming out to sea.

I always enjoyed her blog. I could not imagine how someone under 40 had such a grasp of the music, mores, attitudes and well, everything, from the 1960's, which I lived through. She was spot-on about it. The wide-ranging topics of her blog showed an incredibly sharp, inquisitive and analytical mind. Her perfume reviews were incredibly deep, sometimes twisted, always brilliant and to be respected, even if you did not agree with her.

It's all very sad. Hers was one of the first blogs I ever found on perfume, and I had in the past sent POL'ers there. Two lives snuffed out so young. Very tragic.

PLEASE tell me this is not true. Please. There must be some mistake.

That's absolutely awful. I also read Theresa's blog, we even exchanged a few emails last year... All her last posts spoke of her youth, associating them to a scent. It was brilliant writing.
I'm very, very sorry to learn this. She was indeed a bright, fascinating woman.

Sorry, very true. My friend was his high school and college sweetheart. Still lives in the DC area. He is missing, she is dead, pills.

I've just been on her blog, there are a lot of posts up to July 10th. It seems weird, that sort of glimpse. She said she was preparing a political essay.

She was on vacation on the Eastern Seaboard.

She's never skipped more than a day or two and always told everybody where she was going if she was going to be away. Except this time.

No, FTR, she was working on a movie in NYC, not vacationing. He moved there with her for the duration. I believe there were setbacks about the movie, which may have, well, caused her decision. I believe she died July 12th.

The last she mentioned her location in her blog, she was on vacation on the Eastern Seaboard.

Where ever she was, it's unbearable.

NJ, any chance it was an accidental dose?

I have been awed by the writing this woman produced. She had a gritty poetry. This amazing comment from an interview with her:

Q: If you were to make a perfume that embodied the essence of Los Angeles, what would it smell like?

A: My cologne is called Santa Ana after the powerful winds that bring desert heat and faraway smell into the city. It smells like: Celluloid and sand, coyote fur and car exhaust, contrail cloud and chlorine, bitter orange and stage blood and one bushel of ghostly, shivery night-blooming jasmine flowers like blown kisses from the phantoms of the ten thousand screen beauties who still haunt our hills every full moon because they think it's a stage light.

----------

She was an artist on many levels.

This is trully tragic. There are no words...

I was thinking about her the other day in fact. I just wish that those who hurt her take a good look into themselves and find a way to reconcile ends.
Despite what petty vanity one might fault her with, she had the true soul of a poet.

Flowers on the grave of ms.Duncan....

It is possible, of course, 5Oaks, but I was told things were spiraling out of control. I really shouldn't say anymore at this time about the circumstances, I suppose. I don't have all the details, and what I've said so far was reported to me by very close friends of his/hers, so my info is second hand, at best.

I feel a dolt for having never heard of her or read her. I shall remedy that if her blog remains. Can someone post a link?

RIP, Ms Duncan.

This is so tragic. I have no words. Her blog was one of the first, and very different from all the others all the way through. She always seemed to hate New York (in her posts, anyways), so there couldn't be a worse place for her to die. I am just covered with goosebumps as I'm writing this.
Anyone who knows who to contact for condolences, parents, friends or family, please write me privately.
